Return of the Herbs! written by Leslie Tieke

Much  inspiration for my jewelry comes from my experience in God’s creation.  I hope you enjoy, as I share thoughts about my relationship with  summer herbs.  I wrote  “Return of the herbs”  in April of 2003 and found it on a sheet of paper in a box a few days ago.  It made me smile and I hope it makes you smile too!  If you like it, share it with your  plant loving friends.

They are back! My treasured friends, I have missed their company, their essence, their smell and most of all their taste.  The winter was made longer by their absence.  As humans it seems we must have periods of drought to make us appreciate the precious sip of moisture on our lips.  Maybe that is why God gave us winter.  Maybe we would simply take for granted the beauty of green grass and red geraniums.

In April I visited the greenhouse with the excitement of a child going to pick out a new puppy.  Patiently I chose from the flats of basil, chives, rosemary, fennel, oregano and sage.  The lavender came home with me, just for the smell it gives!  My friends are back!  They will be lavished upon by my water hose and my daily attention.  And each day they will give of themselves as I give myself  to them.  Some things are difficult to explain to a person that’s not intimately involved with herbs.  It’s strange to me, how peaceful I felt as I finished planting this season’s herbal family.  I felt secure, grounded, my food for the season had arrived from God.  This is the best season for food, this is the season for the cancer child.  In the days ahead  I will search in other greenhouses until the dill is found.  Thyme will come to me also, last year I had a variety called Mother of Thyme.  I save places in the herb garden for the late arrivals, like a camp counselor saves a bunk bed for the kid arriving on the late train.  Tonight I will feast from a variety of four different lettuce plants and the herbs will sing with the addition of olive oil and vinegar.  As with many things in life, the finished product is wonderful, yes the taste contained in this bowl is the best, but the journey to the bowl is even better.  The quiet early morning visits with my plants quickly become a sweet ritual, they with their dew, me with my creamed up coffee, ready to start the day.

Moments of intense drama arrive in July, when I find them limp and sad from to little water  or attention.  I will lavish them with moisture and give them the verbal pep talk, come on you guys, you can do it, hydrate for Pete’s sake!  I promise the night will refresh you and the angel of the herbs will heal your souls with the dew from God.  We rejoice with the resurrection that occurs, just as God refreshes us with our need for nourishment .  Yes, they are back, one of the greatest gifts from the Creator, my herbal friends.  What will they teach me this season?  Respect for life and the beauty of new growth is always on their teachers outline.  The journey begins, my friends are back!

Iam amazed, Leslie, by your beautiful writing and how easily you took me to your nurturing herb garden where I also felt God’s blessings of these food sources and how they inspire you. I will forever view and think of herbs in this manner now. Thank you for sharing your gift!
